Where chiropractic offices differ
- Cash pay patients. When a patient pays in full out of pocket and asks you not to tell their health plan, you must agree. Your policies and request forms need to handle this.
- Personal injury cases. Attorney and insurer requests for records need a valid authorization or a subpoena that meets the rules. Front desk staff should route them, not answer them.
- Imaging. X rays and imaging centers are part of the record and part of the risk analysis.
- Open treatment areas. Some incidental disclosure is allowed, but the policies should set reasonable safeguards for conversations and screens.
